Seek Adventure on a Seattle Holiday

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

If you're looking for an active vacation, Seattle would be the perfect choice for a holiday because of how close the destination is to the Canadian Rockies - one of the best places in the world to go if you're a fan of the great outdoors.

Should you decide to head to Seattle, you will find that there are various ways in which you can get to know the metropolis.

If you're staying for a while, there's no reason for you not to try them all - and you will probably want to, since they will all give you a very different experience of this part of the US.

You might want to hire a bike or two and familiarise yourself with the metropolis using a bit of pedal power. An urban cycling tour is one of the best ways to see Seattle's city landscapes, picturesque waterways and stunning mountain views.

Why not start your bike trip at the world-famous Olympic Sculpture Park and head on past the waterfront and ship canal, seeing some of the famed neighbourhoods as you go?

You'll come across a lot of art in the Sculpture Park, watch ships as they navigate their way around the Ballard Locks and stop in awe when faced with the amazing views of the Olympic Mountains.

If you're particularly lucky, you could even watch salmon making their journey along a fish ladder - not a sight you're likely to come across every day. Then cycle through the hip Fremont district and keep your camera at the ready to snap a few pictures of the floating homes on Lake Union.

Should you decide you want to see a bit more of this lake, you might be taken with another way of seeing Seattle - by kayak.

This particular lake is a very important habitat for lots of wildlife and flowers, with a wide variety of birds waiting to be spotted in the Washington Park Arboretum. You'll also come face to face with some wonderful views of the Seattle skyline and can spend time exploring the coves around the lake.

However, the best way to get to know Seattle is by foot, since you can wander around at your own pace and spend a lot of time doing as you please.

If you do decide to walk around, you should check out the Pike Place Market and stop there to have a rest and listen to a few buskers before heading off for some refreshments at one of the famous clubs, bars and restaurants in the area. On foot, you are sure to learn all about Seattle's local grunge scene and discover the impact the city had on global music.

Should you plan to carry on your active holiday, head to the Canadian Rockies - which are located on the very doorstep of Seattle.

Here, you will be able to enjoy adventurous pastimes such as canoeing, golfing, backpacking, skiing, biking, fishing and hiking - all of which can be signed up for in the Banff National Park.

This part of the world is well known for its hiking opportunities and you will find some of the most beautiful icefields, glaciers, lakes and peaks in the country at this site.

Head for Sunshine Meadows if you don't want to exert yourself too much - you can find some great views of Mount Assiniboine here - while Lake Louise would also be a good choice if you're new to area and don't want to tire yourself out excessively.

Should you wish to exert yourself a little, give Cory Pass - one of the hardest routes to be found in the national park - a go.

This 13 km loop should take you around six hours to complete and you might want to keep your camera in your hand, as this is bear country and you will find lots of great photo opportunities will arise.

As you can see, there is much to consider adding to your itinerary while on an activity holiday in this part of the world, so consider making it an extended break that will offer you enough time to see Seattle and indulge in the many pursuits available in the nearby Canadian Rockies.

Looking for an activity holiday that incorporates a spell of traveling to Canada? Book Canadian Rockies tours with Trek America and you can do just that.

Surfing in Miami

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Many extreme sports aficionados are often surprised to hear that Miami has a legitimate surfing scene. The diverse Floridian coastline, with its range of picturesque beaches, is nothing short of a road-tripper's paradise. Don't limit your Miami trip to wining, dinning and shopping - let your sightseeing adventure coincide with surfing's oxy-moronic combination of relaxation and exhilaration. If you haven't done so already, set up the roof racks, wind down the window and let the swell chart dictate your next destination.

Overview

Miami's coast is beset with over 10 surf spots that all offer the extreme sports enthusiast something a little different. The excellent American roads enable travelers to reach every spot, without too much difficulty.

The Best Spots

South Beach - Miami's most renowned beach has also become a firm favorite for the local surfers. This spot can become a bit crowded at times, but the locals are reasonably amicable. South Beach is great for beginners because the waves are small and surfing lessons are often given here. If you are looking for some bigger swell, then you have to wait for a storm, or move onto a beach a little further north.

Harbor House - This spot lies just north of Miami Beach and it's perfect for a beginner, but can become a little annoying for someone who has been surfing for a while. The small waves in this area make it a perfect beach for an amateur to learn. If you are desperate for an overhead swell, then it's best to wait for a cyclone or surf elsewhere.

Dania South Beach - Drive just past Fort Lauderdale and find Dania South Beach. This lesser known gem has been known to throw up some excellent almond-shaped barrels from time to time. The spot is a little fickle, so don't feel disheartened if you find the surf flat. The spot is relatively uncrowded during the week, but be prepared to hustle for waves over the weekend.

Spoils - This spot is strictly for experienced surfers and it is therefore generally uncrowded. Whereas all the other spots have a sandy bottom, this one features the rocks and coral reef. The spot breaks very far out and you have to be a good surfer if you even want to try and surf here. The take off wedges and becomes very steep - you could easily end up landing face-first on the reef if you don't know what you are doing.

Picking up lessons

There are various sites on the net that offer surf lessons in the Miami area. You could either book before your arrival; or, just stroll along the beach and find someone surrounded by surfboards. The Miami locals are renowned for their friendliness, so don't ever hesitate to ask someone.

Do something a little different

Surfing is just one of the activities that you can participate in. There are a wide range of excellent opportunities that can meet the desires of every traveler. When you visit Miami, you should try to open your mind and experience as much as possible. There are so many things to see in Miami and you should never let your fears stop you from enjoying a fulfilling experience. Use your Miami holiday to reacquaint yourself with your inner-daredevil.

Retrospectively Travelling to Disneyland Paris

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Disneyland Paris, previously dubbed Euro Disney, has been a mecca for many European families since it opened in the mid 90's. Disney had a well established reputation in Florida and California so it was with great anticipation that the new park should be announced to open in France. Albeit the park suffered some setbacks for the first few years, Disneyland Paris has now secured its future as one of the best tourist destinations in Europe.

The opening of the park was more exciting for us Brits, as Disney epitomised the Western culture by which we had a closer relationship with than our European neighbours. With the completion of the Channel Tunnel, getting to France was easier than ever, but that's not to say we weren't already very efficient at crossing that moat. With ferries and the golden age of the hovercraft, families could visit France for a long weekend and return the next day with a boot full of wine and cheese.

Now, I've crossed the Channel many times, growing up alongside my brother, set on another family trip around the French countryside. We travelled by various methods each time either by ferry, air or train, but the one method of travel which stuck in my mind the most was the hovercraft. Seeing that awesome feat of engineering speed across the water and mount the concrete right in front of the car was something to behold. The sound of the propellers and the size of the vessel were huge and I wish it were still around today.

In a way I felt like the hovercraft was superseded by the Catamaran. At the time this vessel was a futuristic, tri-bowed ferry which seemed like a sleeker and quieted alternative to the hovercraft, almost more civilised in its character. The SeaCat was a popular company to travel with and the awe struck me as a child just as the hovercraft did.

The procedure for boarding was the same; park up and wait to drive onto the vessel. The only thing which was different was how the catamaran opened its hull seamlessly from the front as if it was its own party piece. The ride was a lot more comfortable as well with an open deck, an arcade and a café to keep us entertained.

This was all part of the fun in getting to France and for a few times it was how we got to visit Disneyland Paris. Of course you can still go for this option with the countless ferries that cross the Channel every day and you will be able to relax on board before disembarking for the drive to the park. However, an element of that childlike awe has vanished with the disappearance of the hovercraft and, to a lesser extent, the catamaran.

Now the most popular method of transport is by train through the tunnel. As with all old leisurely vehicle's, new faster and sleeker innovations make them obsolete as people prefer to save time and money rather than treating the journey as part of the trip. I travelled on the tunnel as part of a trip with the school to Disneyland Paris and although there is not much to see and do, this is obscured by the fact that it is a very quick way to get there, practically dropping you off at the parks entrance.

In a way, we could look at the Channel Tunnel as being the saviour of Disneyland Paris whilst it rode those first few turbulent years after it opened. Would the huge number of visitors be willing to travel there if there wasn't this sort of transport? The Channel Tunnel was a monumental feat of engineering when it was conceived, but now it is almost a way of life, with people practically commuting to France for their short stays.

Space Tourism - The Malaysian March

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Introduction to Space Tourism

Space tourism refers mainly to the visitation of locations outside earth. Unlike other kinds of tourism, this kind of tourism is relatively still a dream for many. Space travel itself has been around for more than 40 years since man first attempted space flights and then landed on the moon.

Its technology is radically different from any other type of tourism-related technology - maybe because it's a relatively new frontier just as when the airplane emerged - hence, it remains within the purview of government and a few agencies.

Space exploration is motivated by man's quest to understand and harness the limitless resources of space. Governments have generally dominated space activities mainly for military, scientific and communication purposes.

Experts with many years of studying and practicing are the only recognized voice when it comes to space issues. For the past thirty years, ordinary people have watched to see when space will be opened up to the public to investigate just as any tourist investigates its destination unimpeded.

This is the birth of space tourism. Space tourism itself is not an easy venture to manage since the broad requirements for such a tourism venture involve technology and conditions vastly different from earth conditions.

Fundamentals of Space Tourism

Space tourism is an exciting venture gaining fast publicity and huge unsatisfied demand. Before this excitement can be realized, the fundamentals of space travel must be sorted.

These fundamentals include:
Finance - payment for servicesTraining - familiarity with space conditions, transportation systems and possible activities applicable to touristTransportation - launch sites, space vehiclesAccommodation - Docking stations e.g. international space station

Finance is currently a big factor in space tourism quite outside the reach of ordinary citizens who would be willing to travel to space. The first private citizen to travel to space for a week stay in the international space station (ISS) - Dennis Tito - paid a whooping US$20 million to get aboard the Russian Soyuz.

Since then, a few individuals have joined him. However, according to Virgin Galactic - one of the enterprising companies offering commercial space travel - the cost of traveling to space currently (as at 2011) stands at US$200,000 with a US$20,000 deposit. If you intend to stay for a week, the budget might as well skyrocket into the millions of dollars.

The US$200,000 might not be a huge amount compared to the millions of dollars fare paid by the pioneer space tourists but is still out of reach for most people.

Moreover, training is an important part of space tourism. The Russian Federal Space Agency provides up to six months training before a space tourist is finally approved for a space tour. This is part of the huge financial cost including physical test and fitness inspections, familiarization with the powerful G-forces during take-off and landing, zero gravity simulations and lots more.

Furthermore, transportation to space follows after successful completion of the training. Launch sites and reliable spacecrafts must be in place to provide space tours when required. So far, the Russian Soyuz has been the only space vehicle to convey space tourists to the international space station (ISS) and back but this vehicle was not specifically designed as a space tourism vehicle.

Many space tour agencies are lobbying the Russians to build a custom space tourism spacecraft to enable more space tourist visit the International space station (which is approximately 200 mile above earth) and beyond or perhaps help drive the tour cost down. This is a work in progress for everyone and every space loving organization and government. Cheap, reliable and safe transportation to space is the single most problematic part of the space tourism equation.

Additionally, accommodation issues must be sorted and it presents exciting possibilities in space. Currently, accommodation remains the International space station. However, the ISS was not designed for this purpose.

Therefore, the request for space hotels for tourist is the clamor and sure enough, there are answers. Bigelow Aerospace is gearing up for an independent mini space station of space tourists complete with its complex for the whole space tour. Hilton hotels is also voicing out its interest. With accommodation in space, is there any limitation for other businesses? The imagination of man holds the answer.

Furthermore, space tourism destinations can be either sub-orbital or orbital travels. Sub-orbital space travel includes traveling some kilometers outside earth but not into the orbit of another body such as another planet or moon.

On the other hand, orbital travels involve more than sub-orbital travels. This travel includes entering the orbits of other bodies in space or even other galaxies. Man has a lot of experience with sub-orbital travels for decades and this is what will be exploited in preparation for the private citizens' space tourism industry.

Many governments including Malaysia are either increasing awareness or beginning to develop these fundamentals to prepare for the exciting future of space tourism.

Overview of Malaysian Tourism

The Malaysian tourism industry is a progressive and successful one. It aspires to be an international tourism destination. According to the 2010 United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Report, Malaysia ranked 9th in international tourist arrivals, welcoming 24.6 million visitors through its doors. The impact of these efforts resulted in international tourism receipt of RM 56.5 billion in 2010.

Foundation of Space Tourism in Malaysia

Development and oversight of space activities is championed by the Malaysian National Space Agency (ANGKASA). This government agency seeks to develop the country's potential in the space sector. The foundation for space activities in Malaysia resides in the operation of the Malaysian space center that trains, monitors and operates space equipments, experiments and develops young talents for future space activities.

The Malaysian National Space Agency is mostly concerned practically with science and science-related activities at the moment. However, space tourism activities are gearing up to raise sufficient awareness for the public to develop interest in the sector. The government is also sponsoring various competitions to encourage interest and participation in the sector.

Considering space activity involvement from the governments' perspective, the Malaysian government has shown a lot of interest in space activities such as developing space research infrastructure, partnerships with international space agencies, promotional activities and jointly sponsoring commercially rewarding experiments.

This includes research on micro gravity sciences, space weather and scientific payload effects as indicated on the Malaysian National Space Agency website. The foundation for space activity is set which allows the natural occurrence of space tourism activities.

Prospects of Space Tourism in Malaysia and Implications for students

Space activity is gaining momentum in Malaysia. As Malaysia approaches its vision of becoming a developed country by 2020, the space sector is bound to expand. As with other progressive sectors, private sector involvement is critical if space tourism is to find its place in Malaysia.

The space tourism sector in Malaysia is at the awareness stage leaving a whole new sector open to be harnessed by anyone. The space tourism sector will require a lot of boost to grow as with other tourism sectors. This growth begins from the national policy on space activities.

Where such policies is inclusive to Malaysians, attractive to regional and international investors and practical to the global demand for sustainable space tourism, Malaysia will be on the path to exploiting the limitless reaches of space. The prospects are huge but a lot of work needs to be done. Shall work-in-progress describe it?

Consider the implications for students. An untapped sector such as space tourism raises all kinds of opportunities for students of various disciplines but requires careful consideration. This is because the governments' direction in the sector will affect the attractiveness of the industry at home and by extension the success of the industry.

Nevertheless, the positive potential of the worldwide space tourism industry in the future is uncontested. Students who wish to be involved in the sector as employees will need to proceed with caution but students that want to engage in the sector as pioneers, trail blazers and/or researchers are encouraged to take the leap.

As increasing private sector involvement is encouraged by governments, private companies and individuals prepared to confront the hassles of startup will be better positioned to reap the benefits of hard work in the future.

Recommendations

The following recommendations if implemented by the Malaysian authorities will accelerate the interest and development of space tourism in Malaysia;
Development of a clearer, more visible and practical space policy that communicates the benefits of space tourism to all MalaysiansDevelopment of more learning facilities to train Malaysians on space related activities with a focus on future space tourism industryProviding adequate incentives for student interested in space tourism and related space activitiesSustaining space related interest in secondary school students to prepare for the future space tourism industryDeveloping appropriate feedback mechanisms to gain insight into peoples interest in space related issuesDevelop plans to attract or retain young international talents to beef up development of the sectorEncourage more private businesses and tertiary institutions to diversify into space related product and servicesProvide more visible and accessible data on space related activities to provide incentive for further research in the sectorPromote space activities with the same vigor as other tourism sectors are promoted in MalaysiaImprove national budget on space related activities to communicate more commitment to the sector.

Conclusion

This article investigated space tourism, its foundation in Malaysia, its future and implications for students. It was found that the space activities in Malaysia is supported and promoted by the government through the National Space Agency.

Science and science-related activities were predominantly the activities of the agency. Space tourism is still at the awareness stage in the country and more work will need to be done to ensure it gains the needed momentum required to add positively to the economy.

This has huge implications for students. For example, students interested in becoming researchers and pioneers of the sector were encouraged to take a chance to contribute to the development of the sector.

Pertinent recommendations were suggested if implemented will provide the required boost to ensure Malaysia distinguishes itself in space tourism from other third world countries as quickly as it is doing in other sectors of the economy. What do you think?

Making The Most Out Of Your Gap Year Options

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Gap year is typically the transition year every high school student goes through before entering the university. More than just being an important personal holiday, it is the time when students can make clear decisions about their future. With various gap year options, planning the career they would take the next year could come easily for them.

While this transition period has the word 'year' in it the exact number of months it covers often varies depending on the students' personal experiences. It can be spent in any way a student wants to spend it. However, travelling to different countries is the leading activity most students engage during this season of their lives.

Knowing where to go and the very purpose of your travel are the two very important things you got to resolve before taking off. By surfing the online space, you can get insights from websites holding gap year programs abroad. Most of these programs are divided into two sub-categories for volunteer work abroad or a paid job abroad. Whichever the student chooses, vacation remains a major part of their gap year journeys.

If volunteering abroad is how you see yourself spending your gap year, be reminded that volunteers to other countries are required to pay their own trip expenses and provide their own living allowances for the rest of their stay abroad. Look for programs that would fit both your budget and passion. You can choose those that last only for weeks or months if you cannot spend an entire year.

For volunteer vacations, you may find yourself traveling in Africa to advocate animal and environment protection while enjoying the unique wildlife there. You can also engage in caring for the AIDS victims or teaching the poor children in Cambodia. There are a lot of gap year options available for those who love to vacation and to volunteer at the same time. They just have to be wise in choosing which ones suit their advocacies, personalities and their budgets.

On the other hand, those who love the outdoors and want to earn money while on vacation may find spending their gap year in Asian countries like Japan worthwhile. There they can enjoy extreme activities like skiing or snowboarding up to their hearts' content. They too can make a living either by conducting some ski lessons or by teaching interested Japanese natives how to speak in conversational English fluently.

If you have set learning Japanese as one of your goals in visiting the country, you can just ask a native friend to help you learn it. In return, you can help him learn English. That is if you would not need the extra income you will get from teaching English.

Another thing that should be a part of your gap year options is your travel insurance. This essential as you will be engaging in many out-of-doors endeavors. Having one can make you feel secured that you are covered no matter what happens to you while you are away from home.

Heritage Site Provides History Lesson

AppId is over the quota

The Blackfoot Nation or Niitsitapi, meaning original people, actually consists of four distinct Blackfoot nations, who share a historical and cultural background but have separate leadership. Alberta is home to three of these nations; the Siksika Nation (whose name literally means Blackfoot), the Akainawa Nation (also called Kainai or Bloods) and the Piikani or Peigan Nation. The, fourth, the Blackfeet Nation is in Montana. These nomadic plains hunters shared a common language and culture, had treaties of mutual defense, and freely intermarried.

As part of the Great Plains, Southern Alberta is mainly grasslands which is good for herds of animals like buffalo, but much too dry for farming without irrigation so the Blackfoot peoples relied on their powerful buffalo-hunting skills to prosper. For half of the year these nomad people would follow the buffalo herds and hunt them for most of their food.

These skilled hunters used their knowledge of topography and buffalo behavior to hunt at one of the most remarkable sites in southern Alberta, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump where the ritual of hunting buffalo is approximately 9,000 years old.

The famous world heritage site, just west of Fort MacLeod, is now home to an interpretive centre that blends into the ancient sandstone cliff and tells the stories of these great hunters.

As visitors to the site, we began our day with a walk along the lower trail through the area at the bottom of the cliff where the band would camp together and butcher the recently killed buffalo. The gully at the base of the cliff was carved by a stream flowing from a spring that was the source of water used for cooking and drinking by the hunters. The oldest evidence of prehistoric occupation at Head-Smashed-In was found in the stream in 1940 when a rancher found two ancient spearheads called scottsbluff, a tool that is known to date to about 9,000 years ago.

As we walked we couldn't help but feel the presence of the great spirits of both the brave hunters and their powerful fallen prey. It is easy to imagine yourself among the busyness of families as they came together to share the great task of cutting grinding and pounding all the useful parts of the fallen buffalo into the food and clothing they would need to survive the long, cold winters. From these lower trails we looked up toward the top of the vast face of the cliff where the buffalo would, one after the other, fall from the great height to their death at the bottom.

Inside the centre we made our way through the five distinct levels of displays that told great stories of the ecology, mythology, lifestyle and technology of the Blackfoot peoples. The in-depth history lesson blended the viewpoints of the aboriginal people and archaeological science.

The theatre showed the story of the great hunt as it was recreated on screen using computer generated graphics. At the top of the building and through the door to the outside we found ourselves looking down from the top of the vast cliff. We could imagine the sights and sounds of chaos here at the exact spot where the lead buffalo of the heard realized there was nowhere left to go, and with the stampeding heard pushing forward behind plummeted to the depth below.

The Blackfoot people have two principal deities; the Sun, and a supernatural being known as Napi, 'Old Man'. Napi taught the Blackfoot people that a group of hunters must be ready at the bottom of the cliff to kill all the buffalo that did not die as a result of their fall. If any of these buffalo survived the fall according Napi's stories they would return to their heard and share the story of the great hunt with the rest of the heard who would then be wiser, more informed and less likely to be as easily lead in the future.

By the early 1900's the buffalo became extinct and the Blackfoot people struggled to find their way of living without them and eventually turned to farming or cattle ranching. These resilient peoples were able to adapt and they became strong again. There are approximately 14,000 Blackfoot peoples living in the area today.

Everest - More Than One Way to the Top

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Fluttering prayer flags, a big, old sign post and that unbeatable sense of achievement: Seeing the world's biggest mountain or reaching Everest Base Camp is the dream of many adventurers. But there's no one way to the top. Whether you're a fair weather walker, an armchair traveller or a trekker who's seen it all, there are the many ways to the top of the world.

Everest Base Camp Trek

The classic route to base camp is a 12 day guided trek, starting in the little town of Lukla in Nepal. You'll stay in tea houses or camp as you make your way up the increasingly steep path through rhodedendrum forest, passing remote monasteries, rural farms, icy glaciers and high passes. As with all guided treks through Nepal, your luggage will be transported by a team of porters, who will also set up camp (if necessary) ahead and show you how mountain trekking is done!

Gokyo Lakes route

An Everest Base Camp Trek is tough. But if that's not good enough for you, Gokyo Lakes is an even bigger challenge. This route starts in much the same way but becomes tougher as you stay at altitude for longer, extending your trek by a few extra days to traverse the beautiful and dramatic Gokyo Lakes region. Not for the faint hearted.

Everest Scenic Flight

If all that talk of trekking brings on a pulmonary, it sounds like you are the kind of traveller who would appreciate a more comfortable view of Everest. There are lots and lots of companies operating scenic flights around Everest from Kathmandu. Check their credentials, then hop on board, sit back and enjoy. We advise you take the earliest flight, which tend to offer the best chance of seeing the mountain without clouds.

An easier Everest trek

No trek in the Everest region is a walk in the park but you can experience life on the trail to Everest Base Camp without sacrificing every creature comfort. There are treks that only follow part of the route at a steady pace and stay at the more comfortable mountain huts, known for such luxuries as hot showers and extra blankets!

The North face

Not all roads to Base Camp start in Nepal. Everest also stretches into wonderful, spiritual Tibet and you can explore this mesmerising region, eat momos to your heart's content and join a trek or take a ride to Everest Base Camp via the North Face.

For something completely different

Been there, done that? A Kilimanjaro trek is the next step for any trekker who loves a challenge! There are many routes to the top of the Roof of Africa, so if you're after even more choice, a Kilimanjaro trek might be for you!

The Adventure Company offers a range of Everest base camp trek holidays as well as other fantastic Kilimanjaro trek experiences.

The Cost of the Expat Summer Holiday

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

The air of excitement that we all felt while waiting at the airport to go home for the summer holidays was noticeable everywhere. It was 11pm, 2 weeks into the summer holidays and yet the airport was still crowded with expats on their way home for the 2 - 3 month holiday period to destinations all over the world.

It is the strangest sensation, leaving your home behind. Locking the doors and knowing that you will not be back in your own home for that period of time.

Before we became expats we would never have considered such a long holiday, that would have been insane. Now after 3 years, it is normal. We either ship the animals into a boarding home or get a house sitter, cover as much as we can to keep it clean while we are away, say goodbye to friends and neighbors, arrange to meet family and friends on the other side and off we go.

Those first two weeks are the best, catching up with family and old friends that have known you forever, that know your quirks, bad and good points. Getting back into the groove of your home country, slang, driving and food, which takes approximately 1 minute. Settling down to a good home cooked breakfast that you can only get and have cooked as you have always known it to be.

You book every doctor you can think of to ensure that all your routine medicals are completed before you go home. These lead to more medicals and you spend another two weeks running from pillar to post ensuring everyone goes back to your host country healthy and happy.

You try and visit all the local historical sites, places of interest and fun parks to ensure that the kids are having fun and are being educated along the route. You cram in as much time with Gran, Grandad, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and any other form of relative you can find so that the children can have the time in these 2 months with their family that they have missed out on over the last 10. Old friends are gathered together for catch ups, school and uni friends of your own, school friends of your children, work mates, and friends that you have made over the years and in the rush you find the excitement exhilarating. Shopping becomes fun as you hit all the old haunts and stock up on little delicacies you cannot find in your host country. In our case that would be pork and having a glass of wine at a side cafe.

That is usually our first port of call, to find a restaurant at the airport as we land and have a good old English Breakfast of Bacon, egg, bangers, tomato and toast. Then as the weeks pass, there would be the obligatory spare ribs, bangers and mash, pork rashers and pork chops and last but not least a good pork roast. Having said that these 2 months fill you up for the next 10.

Unfortunately during this time, your partner has to go back to work. Most partners manage 3 or 4 weeks with the family, or do 2 weeks on and then go back and work and come back for another 2 weeks. This is the period which I call the bachelor / ette time, where the host country sees a menagerie of single people floating around. They seem lost and without focus and tend to gather around in groups, not quite knowing what they should be doing and where they should be going. Lost phone calls make their way to the home country, of days of missing family and spouses, of missing the constant noise in the house, of missing the mess and rushed breakfasts. On the other hand, some partners love the time apart to chill, go out and have no responsibilities but for themselves. The spouse in the home country also misses the normality of home life, but is in essence still in the romantized dream of catch up.

It is not all roses though, unless you have a home in your own country, you are living with family and out of suitcases. If you are traveling, you are living in hotel rooms. It is a long time to be away from home.

Then there is the time to come home. To pack and say your goodbyes, knowing that you will not see everyone again for a long time. It is an idolized lifestyle. You are the expat, the one with the exciting life, the one that has taken the initiative to embrace change. This does not stop the tears though, each goodbye has its own lonely heartbreak, as you see your children hug their grandparents and cousins that they love so much. As you cling on to your parents and siblings, knowing that you will only touch again in a very long time to come. It is tough. One of the tougher holidays to go home for, as it is longer and you settle back into your home country routine again, things are comfortable and familiar, you know the shops, the people, the roads, the customs.

You say your goodbyes and at the airport on the way home the kids start chatting about their rooms, their toys, their friends, their new school year and after school activities. They talk about what they are going to do in the new school year and how much they are looking forward to the new challenges. You think of your own challenges, your own room, your own new friends and you know that it is fun and that you are going to embrace the new school year with vigor and enthusiasm to match those of your children.

As an expat how was your holiday? Did you go home, travel the world? What did you do?

If you're keen to spend some time in one of London's most bustling areas, Soho is hard to beat.

Situated within the West End, you'll find this district offers something for everybody and with several high-quality hotels in Soho to choose from, this is certainly somewhere you should consider as both a place to visit and somewhere to stay in the capital.

For this reason, looking at 3* hotels in London in the area could be a good choice. Not only will you get a comfortable room that offers lots of extra amenities, but you'll also pay a reasonable price so that your entire budget won't be taken up by your accommodation costs.

However, it's a good idea to sort out somewhere to stay before you head down to the capital and by booking hotels in the West End you will be in a convenient position to visit one of the many nearby theatres.

Dozens of performing arts venues are situated in the vicinity but perhaps one of the best to visit is the Palace Theatre. This cultural institution has put on several top-quality productions over the years, including Monty Python's Spamalot and Les Miserables, and its ornate redbrick exterior makes it easy to spot.

You can be certain that you'll be able to watch top-class shows here, although you may also want to check to see what's on at the likes of the Criterion Theatre and the Prince Edward Theatre.

But if you'd prefer to take in some live music instead, why not head to Ronnie Scott's?

This venue mainly plays hosts to jazz acts, but singers and musicians across all genres have appeared here over the years. Jamie Cullum, Ella Fitzgerald and Jeff Beck are just some of the big names that have taken to the stage here, although Ronnie Scott's is perhaps best known for being the site of Jimi Hendrix's last show before his death in 1970.

Perhaps one of Soho's most popular attractions is Carnaby Street. Despite its name, this shopping complex spreads out across 12 streets and not only will you find a selection of well-known outlets but also several independent boutiques.

Everything from homewares and beauty products to men's fashion and shoes can be purchased here, but if you need to take a breather from hitting the shops head to one of Carnaby Street's cafes and restaurants for something to eat.

You'll also find a selection of bars and nightclubs here, so Carnaby Street can also be the location for a night out on the town and when you consider that it was at the epicentre of London's swinging 60s it should be of little surprise that this is a place where you can let your hair down and have fun! Soho is also the centre of London's gay scene, so there should a pub or club to suit most tastes.

But if you want something a little more laidback, the nearby Trocadero complex could make for a relaxing, yet no less fun, evening. Located near Piccadilly Circus, the building has a cinema and crazy golf course, not to mention several floors of arcade games.

Whatever you get up to in Soho, there's a good chance you'll work up an appetite. However, you needn't venture out of the district in order to sample high-end cuisine, as there are several award-winning eateries where you can dine.

These include Gauthier Soho, which serves modern French fare and has secured a Michelin star as well as a whole host of prestigious accolades.

No matter whether you're searching for a great night out, keen to spend an evening at the theatre or simply want to enjoy fabulous shopping before tucking into dinner at a top-quality restaurant, Soho offers everything you could possibly want.

If you are searching for hotels in Soho, come to AboutRooms.com.

Visit us and you can check out a range of 3* hotels in London - including hotels in the West End - so you can be sure you'll be close to this vibrant, bustling district.
